Flag off from Tottenham, Melbourne
We started off in our hired 4WD Kia Carnival at 9am taking the Western Ring Road towards Ballarat. Being the long weekend traffic was heavy but we quickly found the Kia a easy handling vehicle on both country and highway roads.
Ararat Stop For Barbeque
Ararat was our first pit stop for a much needed lunch. It's a quiet town with a few interesting lookouts like One Tree Hill. Stopped to refuel before embarking on the lengthy drive to Halls Gap.
Halls Gap
Arrived just before nightfall. Avoid night driving as kangaroos often cross the highway during the evening. Enjoyed the beautiful views just as the sun went down.
Mt Zero Rock Climbing
Take up rock climbing and abseiling for as little as $50. The rock climbing areas are a fair distance from halls gap so be prepared to drive an hour one way. Tours must be booked in advance. Gear and climbing shoes are provided.
Horsham Dinner
Horsham is an hours drive from Mt Zero. We drove here to rest our weary joints. The pub we dined in served up some super steaks. Friendly folk from the town made dinner a pleasant experience.
Return to Melbourne via Stawell
Stopped at Stawell the following day. This completed the Grampians triangle for us. Once again it was great to experience the small town atmosphere. After a quick coffee we headed back to Melbourne via Ararat for one last barbeque.
